Checkers, a popular fast-food franchise, announced that they will be
opening four new locations in Brooklyn, New York.
The multi-unit franchise purchase was made by Kalex Partners which includes the purchase of a location at 491 Nostrand Avenue in Brooklyn which is scheduled to open late this month followed by the opening of three other Checker's stores over the next five years.
It is reported that the Kalex Partners who purchased the four locations qualified for an offer through
VetFran and received a discounted franchise fee. This discount is offered to veterans trying to adjust from the military life to civilian life.
When considering an investment in a Franchise it is important to consider (a) the prospect of
negotiating and obtaining the right to develop multiple units, (b) obtaining a right of first refusal respecting; and (c) evaluate the significance (and potential warning signs) of a discounted franchise fee. Discounts offered to veterans and through VetFran serve a legitimate and well deserved purpose. However "generic discounts" offered to just push Franchise sales
could be a significant warning sign that must be evaluated.
