In terms of franchise trends and topics of discussion, there has been significant interest by franchisors in establishing programs for the sale of franchises to former military members. Is this a form of patriotism or a sales opportunity? I believe the answer depends on the specific franchisor and, on the surface, not easily determinable.
From my perspective, without question, the men and women of the United State armed forces account for and represent - truly - some of the most intelligent, diligent and hard working individuals in this country and the world. These individuals are an exceptional national asset and for this reason, many, would be prime candidates to serve as America's future business leaders. So, franchise sales to military members does make sense and may serve as a "win-win" situation. However, these brave men and women must nevertheless be aware that irrespective of a franchisor's good intentions (which I believe many have) buying a franchise is not right for everyone and there is tremendous variation as to the quality of franchise opportunities. So even if you are offered a military discount, the discount itself should
not be a determining factor in selecting a franchise. Always conduct a thorough evaluation of a franchise opportunity.
Moving past my words of caution recently
G.I. Jobs, an online resource which provides current and former members of the military with information on education, employment and franchise opportunities, released a list with their top picks for military friendly franchises. Franchises on the "Military Friendly Franchises 2011 List" were surveyed by G.I. Jobs and determined to have (a) a success in recruiting military and veterans, (b) a participation in non-financial efforts to recruit and retain military veterans (such as participating in programs like VetFran) and (c) a participation in financial efforts to recruit and retain military veterans (such as offering a discount to military veterans). Franchises that ranked high on the "Military Friendly Franchise 2011 List" are broken up by franchise type and listed below. Please keep in mind this list was based off of surveys given to franchisors about their own franchise system and does not necessarily reflect the views of veteran franchisees associated with the franchises. The list was reported by G.I. Jobs.
