The Role of a Franchisor

A franchisor is defined as the person who owns a company, along with its trademarks and products
. However the running of the franchise is done by a franchisee. In return for running the company, a franchisee pays the franchisor a fee that they have both agreed upon.

It's important to take into account all of the legal aspects involved before deciding to become a franchisor. Keep in mind that when you determine to become a franchisor you are no longer in the business of whatever product or service your company offers. Instead, you are now in the business of selling franchises.

It's important for individuals to recognize how significantly their role will change once they enter into a franchise business
. For instance, if your company sold eco-friendly totes and you decide to franchise your business your main focus will no longer be on eco-friendly totes but promoting a franchise that sells eco-friendly totes.

Making the Decision to Become a Franchisor

You have to decide if it is worth your making the change to become a franchisor. Here are some questions to consider before becoming a franchisor:

  • Will enough money be generated from the franchised business to make it worth it for a franchisee?
  • Will a franchisee be able to afford the typical business operating expenses in addition to the royalty fee that is paid to you, the franchisor? Will the products and/or services being offered succeed in other locations?
  • Can an inexperienced individual understand and learn the business's concept?
  • Is the trade name or logo easily recognizable? Is it registered federally?
