Franchise Agreements (Part B)

Reviewing the Franchise Disclosure Document

The franchise agreement is signed when you have made your final decision to buy the franchise. Before you sign on the dotted line, you will have a chance to review the Franchise Disclosure Document (FDD). The FDD will allow you to review information such as the franchisor's company history and background.

The FDD will include any lawsuits or bankruptcies that the franchisor has experienced in the past
. Also in the FDD, you will find financial and distribution channel information, as well as confidentiality restrictions, i.e. which information you may or may not disclose.

Before you sign the franchise agreement, you should go over the FDD with a New York franchise attorney. An attorney will help you understand your obligations as a franchisee. Once you have thoroughly read the information provided in the FDD, you can proceed to sign the franchise agreement, and start your new franchise in New York.
